Strategic Self-Control
The Bernoulli Network for the Behavioral Sciences at the University of Basel is pleased to announce the 9th Bernoulli Lecture for the Behavioral Sciences. Professor Angela Duckworth, University of Pennsylvania (USA) will speak on “Strategic Self-Control”. The Lecture is free and open to the public.
Angela Duckworth uses psychological science to understand how individuals exercise self-control to achieve their goals. Duckworth’s research suggests that passion and perseverance — a combination that she calls “GRIT”— are crucial to reaching one’s objectives and may be as important, or more so, than talent and intellect in fueling success. Duckworth’s work became popularized and internationally known with her New York Times bestseller “GRIT: The power of passion and perseverance.” In her lecture, Duckworth will focus on strategic approaches to exerting self-control that ease resistance to shortterm temptation in several domains of life.
Angela Duckworth is the Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, where she directs the Character Lab, and serves as Faculty codirector of the Penn-Wharton Behavior Change for Good Initiative. Duckworth received her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 2006. Prior to her academic career, Duckworth worked as a strategy consultant as well as a science teacher in the public schools of New York City, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. Duckworth has received numerous scientific awards and her TED talk
GRIT: The power of passion and perseverance continues to inspire millions around the globe.
