Artist Talk: James Bridle – Other Intelligences
On the occasion of the opening of the exhibition Entangled Realities – Living with Artificial Intelligence a talk with the artist James Bridle under the title Other Intelligences will take place.
“The 20th century was defined by humanity’s focus on the industrial and the technological over the ecological and environmental. In the 21st Century we seem just as fixated on the artificial: particularly artificial intelligence, a strategy that may lead to our further estrangement and even our replacement. But what if we see AI as a teacher rather than a master, and a guide to the other intelligences which, having surrounded us for so long, are slowly starting to be recognised?”
With these words James Bridle invites visitors to change their attitude towards artificial intelligence. The author of the bestselling publication New Dark Age, in which he exposes the dark side of the computer revolution, affirms that we must develop greater literacy and democratisation of algorithmic processes that are becoming increasingly present and intrusive.
James Bridle is an artist and writer working across technologies and disciplines. His artworks have been commissioned by galleries and institutions and exhibited worldwide and on the Internet. His writing on literature, culture and networks has appeared in magazines and newspapers including Wired, the Atlantic, the New Statesman, the Guardian and the Observer. New Dark Age, his book on technology, knowledge and the end of the future, was published in 2018, and he wrote and presented New Ways of Seeing for BBC Radio 4 in 2019.
